As time approaches towards the final weeks of the internship I have begun to reflect even more on my experiences. As such, completing a typical task this week helped me realize that sometimes it felt like a rollercoaster. There are times of highs and lows, but all work towards the pursuit of the end goal. This week especially proved to be a testament to that. I found myself continuing my traditional tasks, but going through some ups and downs with them.
At the start of my week, I revisited my Reflections article. Initially, this process was one of my lows as I struggled to connect the two local female leaders. However, after more research this process once again became a high. I found myself easily able to edit the article in a way that intertwined both of their stories. Though there are still further edits to make, I feel reassured about the direction I am taking for this task. Moreover, the process has reminded me of how painstaking research can be. Rather than continue down the rabbit hole, sometimes it is best to take a step back to regroup and approach a topic through a different perspective. Then, I also worked on an audio log for a woman who had literally worked with rollercoasters for most of her career. I listened to the audio log of Kim Sams a PR director for many amusement parks like SeaWorld, Boardwalk and Baseball, and Walt Disney World. Through listening to her story I learned many important lessons outside of the exciting facets. For one, when describing her path towards this extensive career she stressed the importance of hard work. She did not walk into a position like Disney. Instead she described how she worked her way up from a simple part time job at a local attraction to taking local opportunities for promoting events. She emphasized how doing these less appealing jobs allowed her to get her name out there. More importantly, she recounted how while on a work trip she continued to have the same work ethic, which stood out to a manager who then recommended her for a higher role that eventually led her to Disney. This story helped me value the seemingly smaller things in life. It is easy to want to automatically jump into one's final stage in their career or straight to the top. However, it is important to remember that it requires diligent, hard work. Remembering this will aid in getting through the highs and lows of any rollercoaster in life.
Additionally, this week I continued my routine at the offsite. However, I have been continuously encountering new objects to package and catalogue. While organizing Mary I. Johnson's collection I have started finding more of her unique awards. This ranged from elaborate ones that included a real water meter on it and ones shaped like the state of Florida to simpler plaques and ribbons acknowledging her service to the city. Seeing the breadth of these awards has given me even more respect for the legacy of the former commissioner. Though, while cataloguing her large collection I almost ran into another problem. The donations of her items made to the museum came in 2 batches. I discovered that this meant that even though they were a part of the same overall collection they had two different accession numbers. Luckily, this did not affect any work I had done previously. Going forward, I just have be more cautious when choosing the next box of items to log. I will have to double check which accession number it is attached to and mark it accordingly. Outside of this I am enjoying learning more about the overall collections process. It is fun to feel myself become more familiar with the software system as well as the offsite location in general. Going into next week, I hope to focus more on packaging the unique items I am finding and using any highs and lows of the week to lead me towards successfully completing my final tasks for the internship.
