This week saw the conclusion of my time at the offsite location. During this last day I was able to reflect on all that I have learned during this experience. Additionally, it allowed me to consider how I will use my remaining time at the OCRHC.
The start of the week proved to be slightly different than usual. For one, I had my capstone examinations on Thursday. Thus, most of my time this week went into preparation for these tests and last edits to my proposal. I was grateful to have the time to complete these tasks. After completing my capstone exams I was then able to decide how I wanted to allocate the rest of my time for the internship. Due to the coming holiday I realized that I may only have one day that could be set aside for my final day at the offsite. I decided to use Friday as this day and end my week with this experience. My final day at the offsite saw a review of my previous skills. I continued cataloguing items as well as learning new techniques for labeling larger items that could not fit in archival bags. While completing these tasks I reflected on how comfortable I had gotten with Proficio. I found myself using shortcuts that I was too afraid to utilize before. I no longer had to reference my notes to remember where things were located. Additionally, I took initiative when it came to finding the next items to catalogue. Before I would wait and ask my supervisor if it was okay to grab something off of the shelf. Overall, during my last day I felt confident in all that I had learned. I also felt a little sad that I could not have my usual amount of time at the offsite to complete more tasks. Nonetheless, working within this space was a truly rewarding opportunity. I am excited to not only add these new skills to my CV, but build upon them in future work.
Then, this last day also spurred me to think about how I will spend my remaining time at the museum. I still have to complete my Reflections article and the short piece for the Community Paper. Therefore, I am determined to complete these two works and bolster my publication experience. Thinking about these goals inspired me to see how I grew also in the museum setting. I am now more comfortable with audio logs and have a consistent system for labeling various parts of the interview. Also, I can see how my research skills have developed. This internship required me to look in unique places to learn more about local leaders and past events in Orlando history. Furthermore, I learned more on how to consolidate this information. As a historian, it is easy to sometimes get very verbose and include much detail when discussing certain events. This internship helped me learn how to be more efficient in my writing and more direct in my message. Ultimately, I have been grateful for my overall experience and look forward to my last few days on-site.
